What API and data model would support a new Energy workflow for performance enthusiasts

Product context: Tesla is an electric vehicle, energy, and software company; its products include EVs, charging, vehicle software, Autopilot/FSD features, energy storage, and solar products.

Tesla wants to explore a new Energy workflow for performance enthusiasts—drivers who care deeply about power delivery, efficiency, charging behavior, battery health, route energy usage, and performance trade-offs. This workflow may span the vehicle, mobile app, charging experience, and Tesla’s broader energy ecosystem, requiring a clear API and data model that can support real-time insights, historical analysis, and personalized recommendations.

As a Technical PM, your task is to define what the underlying API and data model should enable, not to design the UI. Focus on the product requirements, key entities, data flows, permissions, latency needs, and system boundaries required to make this workflow reliable and useful for highly engaged Tesla owners.

The experience should consider:

- The core user workflow for performance enthusiasts and the energy-related decisions they are trying to make

- Key data objects such as vehicle state, battery state, charging sessions, trip energy usage, driving modes, environmental context, and user preferences

- API capabilities needed for reading, writing, subscribing to, or aggregating energy and performance data

- Real-time versus historical data requirements, including latency, freshness, retention, and sampling trade-offs

- Privacy, consent, security, and access control for sensitive vehicle, location, and driving behavior data

- Reliability expectations when the vehicle is offline, charging, in motion, or connected through variable network conditions

- Observability, error handling, auditability, and instrumentation needed to monitor workflow health

- Rollout considerations across vehicle models, firmware versions, regions, and integrations with charging or energy products

The goal is to articulate a technically sound product specification for the API and data model that balances performance-user needs with Tesla’s constraints around safety, scalability, privacy, vehicle reliability, and ecosystem extensibility.
