Problem Statement Description

Product context: Amazon is a commerce, logistics, media, devices, and cloud company; its products include Marketplace, Prime, Prime Video, Alexa devices, ads, fulfillment, and AWS.

Amazon is exploring a new Kindle workflow that allows approved third-party sellers to create, manage, and monitor Kindle-related offerings through a platform API rather than manual or internal-only operations. The workflow may involve listing Kindle-compatible digital content, managing metadata and assets, configuring offers, submitting items for review, and ensuring customers receive the correct entitlement in their Kindle library or device experience.

As the Technical PM, you are expected to define the API surface and underlying data model that would support this seller workflow at Amazon scale. Your scope should include how sellers interact with the system, how Kindle, catalog, marketplace, payments, content ingestion, and entitlement systems may need to coordinate, and how the design protects customer trust while enabling seller self-service.

The design should account for Amazon’s operating environment: large seller volumes, strict content and rights controls, asynchronous processing, high reliability expectations, auditability, and the need to evolve APIs without breaking existing integrations. Focus on requirements, system boundaries, data entities, lifecycle states, and operational trade-offs rather than implementation code.

The experience should consider:

- The end-to-end seller workflow from onboarding or authorization through listing creation, validation, publishing, updates, suspension, and retirement.

- The core data entities, relationships, identifiers, ownership rules, lifecycle states, and versioning needs.

- API capabilities for creating, reading, updating, submitting, tracking, and reconciling Kindle-related seller objects.

- Integration points with catalog, offer management, content ingestion, compliance review, DRM or rights management, customer entitlement, reporting, and support tools.

- Reliability requirements such as idempotency, retries, asynchronous job handling, rate limits, error handling, and backward-compatible API evolution.

- Privacy, security, and permissioning concerns for sellers, customers, content files, sales data, and operational audit logs.

- Observability needs including status visibility, event tracking, failure diagnostics, seller-facing notifications, and internal operational dashboards.

- Product trade-offs between seller flexibility, content quality, launch speed, compliance risk, and customer experience consistency across Kindle surfaces.

Your goal is to present a clear technical product design that shows how the API and data model would enable a scalable, trustworthy Kindle seller workflow while making explicit the assumptions, constraints, risks, and trade-offs behind your choices.
