What metrics would you track to detect healthy versus unhealthy growth in small business cash-flow assistant?

Problem Statement Description

Intuit is evaluating growth for a small business cash-flow assistant aimed at first-time business owners who may be new to invoicing, expenses, payroll timing, taxes, and short-term cash planning. The product helps users understand current cash position, anticipate upcoming gaps, and feel more financially confident when making business decisions.

Your task is to define how you would measure whether the product is growing in a healthy way versus an unhealthy way. Healthy growth should reflect durable customer value, trust, accurate financial guidance, and sustainable business outcomes. Unhealthy growth may include superficial engagement, over-reliance on inaccurate recommendations, poor retention, compliance or privacy risks, or growth driven by users who are not receiving meaningful value.

Focus on building a metrics framework that would help product, finance, data science, risk, and customer-support teams make decisions. Be explicit about how metrics are defined, who is included in the denominator, how data would be instrumented, and how you would separate promising growth from warning signs.

The experience should consider:

- The target user segment: first-time business owners with varying levels of financial literacy, data completeness, and trust in automated financial tools.

- Clear definitions of activation, engagement, retention, and value realization for a cash-flow assistant, including what counts as meaningful use versus passive or accidental use.

- Denominators and cohorts, such as new businesses, connected-account users, invoice-heavy businesses, payroll users, seasonal businesses, or users with incomplete financial data.

- Instrumentation across key workflows, including onboarding, account/data connection, forecast review, alert consumption, recommendation interaction, and follow-through actions.

- Guardrail metrics for forecast accuracy, user trust, support contacts, user confusion, privacy concerns, compliance risk, and adverse financial outcomes.

- Ways to distinguish healthy adoption from unhealthy patterns such as high usage caused by anxiety, repeated forecast corrections, misleading alerts, or low-confidence recommendations.

- Decision usefulness: how the metric set would guide product iteration, go-to-market decisions, risk review, and investment in automation or human support.

The goal is to present a balanced metrics approach that captures customer value, business growth, trust, and risk. Your answer should show how you would detect not just whether usage is increasing, but whether the product is improving financial confidence for small business owners in a reliable, responsible, and scalable way.
