QuestionsMetricsAmazon

What metrics would you use to evaluate a new Alexa feature for families

Problem Statement Description

Product context: Amazon is a commerce, logistics, media, devices, and cloud company; its products include Marketplace, Prime, Prime Video, Alexa devices, ads, fulfillment, and AWS.

Amazon is exploring a new Alexa feature designed specifically for families using shared Echo or Alexa-enabled devices at home. The feature may support multi-person household workflows such as coordinating schedules, reminders, routines, child-friendly interactions, shared entertainment, shopping-related tasks, or communication between family members.

You are being asked to define how Amazon should evaluate whether this feature is successful after launch. The focus is not on designing the feature itself, but on building a metrics framework that can show whether the feature creates meaningful value for families, fits naturally into Alexa usage, and does so safely and reliably in a multi-user household environment.

A strong answer should account for the fact that “family” is not a single user. Different household members may have different permissions, needs, devices, voice profiles, and usage patterns. The metrics should help Amazon understand adoption, repeat value, household-level engagement, customer trust, and whether the feature strengthens Alexa’s role in the home without creating privacy, safety, or usability issues.

The experience should consider:

- How to define the primary success metric and the exact denominator, such as eligible households, activated households, active family members, or Alexa-enabled devices.

- How to distinguish one-time curiosity from sustained household value across days, weeks, or recurring family routines.

- What instrumentation is needed to attribute interactions to the new feature, device type, household, voice profile, and family member role where appropriate.

- Which cohorts matter, such as households with children, multi-device homes, Prime households, new Alexa users, heavy Alexa users, or households using parental controls.

- How to measure activation and completion of family workflows without relying only on raw voice command volume.

- What guardrail metrics are needed for privacy, child safety, accidental activations, incorrect responses, friction, latency, opt-outs, and customer complaints.

- How the metrics would support decisions about iteration, broader rollout, merchandising, personalization, or whether the feature should be scaled back.

- How to interpret trade-offs between engagement growth, customer trust, operational quality, and long-term Alexa ecosystem value.

The goal is to propose a clear, decision-useful metrics framework that an Amazon product team could use to evaluate launch performance, diagnose issues, compare household segments, and decide whether the new Alexa family feature is delivering meaningful customer value.
