What metrics would you use to evaluate a new Azure feature for security teams

Problem Statement Description

Product context: Microsoft is a productivity, software, AI, gaming, and cloud company; its products include Windows, Microsoft 365, Teams, LinkedIn, Xbox, Azure, Dynamics, and Copilot. Azure is Microsoft's cloud platform; its products include compute, storage, databases, networking, identity, AI services, analytics, and developer tools.

You are evaluating a newly launched Azure feature built for enterprise security teams. The feature is intended to help security analysts, security engineers, and cloud security administrators detect, investigate, prioritize, or remediate security risks across Azure environments. The interviewer wants to understand how you would define success for this feature in a Microsoft Azure context, not just whether usage increased.

Assume the feature is part of a broader Azure security workflow where customers may have complex cloud estates, multiple subscriptions, compliance requirements, alert fatigue, and integrations with existing security tools. Your metrics should reflect both customer value and business/platform health, while accounting for enterprise adoption patterns and trust expectations.

You do not need to design the feature itself. Focus on how you would evaluate whether the feature is working, for whom, under what conditions, and how the metrics would guide product decisions after launch.

The experience should consider:

- Clear definition of the feature’s target users, such as SOC analysts, cloud security admins, compliance teams, or security leadership.

- Primary success metric with a precise numerator, denominator, and time window.

- Activation, adoption, engagement, and retention metrics that fit enterprise Azure workflows.

- Security outcome metrics, such as investigation efficiency, alert quality, remediation progress, or risk reduction, without relying only on vanity usage.

- Instrumentation needs across Azure portals, APIs, alerts, workflows, integrations, and customer tenants.

- Cohort cuts by customer size, industry, cloud maturity, subscription type, region, role, and security use case.

- Guardrail metrics for false positives, missed detections, latency, customer trust, privacy, compliance, support burden, and system reliability.

- How the metrics would inform launch decisions, iteration priorities, customer success actions, and trade-offs against competing Azure security investments.

The goal is to propose a practical metrics framework that helps Microsoft determine whether the new Azure security feature is delivering measurable value to enterprise security teams, improving the security posture of Azure customers, and supporting a scalable, trustworthy cloud platform experience.
