Workspace engagement dropped 20% in two weeks among enterprise admins. Diagnose the issue

Problem Statement Description

Product context: Google is a consumer technology, ads, AI, and cloud company; its products include Search, YouTube, Android, Maps, Gmail, Chrome, Google Play, Workspace, and Google Cloud.

Google Workspace has seen a 20% drop in engagement over the last two weeks among enterprise admins. These admins are responsible for managing users, security settings, billing, compliance controls, app access, device policies, and organization-wide Workspace configurations for companies of varying sizes.

In this RCA interview, you are asked to diagnose what may have caused the decline. The focus is not on immediately proposing a product fix, but on structuring the investigation: clarifying the metric, validating the data, segmenting the issue, forming hypotheses, and identifying what evidence would confirm or disprove each path.

Assume this is a business-critical enterprise product surface where admin trust, reliability, security, and operational continuity matter. A drop in admin engagement could reflect a true reduction in need, workflow displacement, access or permissions issues, product usability friction, instrumentation changes, customer behavior shifts, or external enterprise events.

The experience should consider:

- How “engagement” is defined for enterprise admins, including active admins, sessions, key admin actions, frequency, and denominator

- Whether the drop is real or caused by logging, instrumentation, identity, role-mapping, or dashboard changes

- Segmentation by customer size, region, industry, plan type, admin role, tenure, device, browser, and Workspace edition

- Changes in admin workflows such as user provisioning, security policy management, audit logs, billing, support, or app configuration

- Product, UX, permission, authentication, latency, reliability, or navigation changes released in the two-week window

- External factors such as enterprise seasonality, holidays, customer migrations, policy changes, outages, or competitor/admin tool adoption

- Evidence needed from analytics, logs, release history, support tickets, customer success feedback, and incident reports

- Short-term mitigation, customer communication, monitoring, and prevention mechanisms if the issue is confirmed

Your goal is to demonstrate a clear RCA approach that narrows the problem from a broad metric decline into testable causes, separates measurement artifacts from real user behavior changes, and identifies the next data and stakeholder inputs needed to determine impact and response.
