Build a metric tree for Profile after a major redesign

Problem Statement Description

Product context: LinkedIn is Microsoft's professional network; its products include profiles, feed, jobs, recruiting, LinkedIn Learning, sales tools, messaging, and ads.

LinkedIn has recently shipped a major redesign of the Profile experience. The Profile is a core professional identity surface for members and an important research and trust-building surface for sales teams who use LinkedIn to understand prospects, assess credibility, find common connections, and decide whether to engage.

Your task is to build a metric tree that helps evaluate whether the redesigned Profile is successful. The metric tree should connect the redesign’s intended product outcomes to measurable user behaviors, while accounting for LinkedIn’s broader ecosystem of professional trust, network effects, identity quality, and B2B monetization.

Focus on what should be measured, how the metrics should be structured, and how the team would use them to make product decisions after launch. Avoid jumping directly to whether the redesign “worked” without defining the right success metric, supporting drivers, guardrails, and segments.

The experience should consider:

- The primary users and use cases for Profile, especially members maintaining professional identity and sales teams evaluating prospects.

- A clear north-star or primary success metric, including its numerator, denominator, and intended interpretation.

- Supporting input metrics across discovery, engagement, profile comprehension, trust, contact intent, and downstream business value.

- Quality and guardrail metrics, such as profile accuracy, spammy behavior, privacy concerns, latency, user confusion, or negative feedback.

- Key cohorts and cuts, including new vs. existing members, profile owners vs. viewers, sales users vs. non-sales users, mobile vs. desktop, and different industries or seniority levels.

- Instrumentation needs for redesigned components, including impressions, clicks, scroll depth, edits, saves, connection actions, message starts, and profile completion actions.

- How to distinguish healthy engagement from vanity activity or redesign novelty effects.

- How the metric tree would support decisions on iteration, rollout, rollback, or further investment.

The goal is to demonstrate that you can translate a redesigned LinkedIn Profile experience into a practical measurement framework that is decision-useful, well-instrumented, sensitive to user trust, and aligned with both member value and LinkedIn’s business ecosystem.
