Problem Statement Description
Product context: Tesla is an electric vehicle, energy, and software company; its products include EVs, charging, vehicle software, Autopilot/FSD features, energy storage, and solar products.
Tesla has completed a major redesign of the Supercharger experience, with particular relevance for fleet operators who depend on predictable charging to keep vehicles productive. You are the PM responsible for defining how success will be measured after launch and for building a metric tree that connects customer experience, network operations, and business outcomes.
Fleet operators have different needs from individual drivers: they may manage many vehicles, route drivers on schedules, require reliable station availability, track charging costs, and care about minimizing downtime. The redesign may affect discovery, routing, arrival, charging session management, payments, fleet reporting, and support workflows.
Your task is to frame a metric tree that helps Tesla understand whether the redesign is working, where friction remains, and what actions the team should take next. The tree should be useful for product, operations, engineering, energy, and fleet-account teams.
The experience should consider:
- A clear definition of the top-level success metric and why it matters for Supercharger and fleet operators.
- Metric denominators, such as vehicles, drivers, fleet accounts, sessions, stations, stalls, routes, or charging attempts.
- Instrumentation needed across app, vehicle software, charger hardware, payments, support, and fleet admin tools.
- Cohorts such as fleet size, geography, vehicle type, station type, time of day, new vs. returning fleets, and pre- vs. post-redesign users.
- Funnel and behavior metrics that capture the end-to-end charging workflow without over-indexing on a single step.
- Operational and reliability guardrails, including availability, wait times, failure modes, safety, and service quality.
- Business and ecosystem guardrails, such as utilization, revenue impact, energy costs, station congestion, and effects on non-fleet drivers.
- How the metric tree would support decisions about rollout, iteration, capacity planning, and issue prioritization.
The goal is to produce a structured metric framework, not a launch plan or product solution. Your answer should show how you would define, organize, and interpret metrics so Tesla can confidently evaluate the redesign’s impact and decide what to improve next.
