Problem Statement Description
Product context: Tesla is an electric vehicle, energy, and software company; its products include EVs, charging, vehicle software, Autopilot/FSD features, energy storage, and solar products.
You are evaluating how Tesla should measure whether Model 3 is successfully serving EV buyers. The focus is not only on vehicle sales, but on whether buyers can discover, purchase, receive, use, charge, and continue to trust the car as an electric vehicle over time.
Consider the full Model 3 customer journey: researching EV options, comparing against gas vehicles and other EVs, configuring and ordering online, financing or leasing, taking delivery, onboarding to charging and software features, and living with the vehicle day to day. Success should reflect both Tesla’s business outcomes and the buyer’s experience with affordability, reliability, safety, range confidence, charging access, and connected-car value.
Your task is to define a clear metrics framework that would help Tesla understand whether Model 3 is meeting the needs of EV buyers and where the product or experience may need improvement.
The experience should consider:
- A primary success metric and why it represents Model 3’s value to EV buyers.
- Supporting funnel metrics across awareness, configuration, order, financing, delivery, activation, and retention.
- Clear denominators for each metric, such as visitors, qualified buyers, order starters, delivered vehicles, active owners, or charging users.
- Instrumentation needed across Tesla’s website/app, vehicle telemetry, delivery operations, service interactions, Supercharger usage, and customer support.
- Cohorts such as first-time EV buyers, trade-in customers, lease vs. purchase customers, geography, charging access, delivery month, and vehicle configuration.
- Guardrail metrics around safety, service quality, delivery delays, range dissatisfaction, charging failures, cancellations, and owner trust.
- How the metrics would help compare Model 3 performance against buyer expectations and competitive EV alternatives without relying only on sales volume.
The goal is to propose a practical measurement system that Tesla leadership could use to judge whether Model 3 is winning with EV buyers, diagnose friction in the ownership journey, and make informed product, operations, and go-to-market decisions.
