Problem Statement Description
Product context: LinkedIn is Microsoft's professional network; its products include profiles, feed, jobs, recruiting, LinkedIn Learning, sales tools, messaging, and ads.
LinkedIn Feed is a central surface where professionals discover updates from their network, companies, creators, recruiters, and LinkedIn itself. For job seekers, the Feed can influence career exploration, awareness of opportunities, confidence in their professional identity, and actions that may lead to job applications or conversations.
You are asked to define how LinkedIn should measure whether the Feed is successfully serving job seekers. The scope is not limited to job posts appearing in Feed; it should include the broader job-seeking journey, such as discovering relevant companies, learning about roles, engaging with professional content, strengthening network connections, and taking meaningful next steps toward employment.
Your metrics should distinguish between Feed activity that is merely engaging and Feed activity that is useful for job seekers. Consider how success may differ across active applicants, passive job explorers, career switchers, students, recently laid-off members, and members who are privately exploring opportunities.
The experience should consider:
- A clear definition of who counts as a “job seeker” and whether they are active, passive, or inferred from behavior.
- The primary success metric and why it reflects meaningful progress in the job-seeking journey.
- Supporting metrics across discovery, engagement quality, downstream job actions, and longer-term outcomes.
- Denominators and cohorts, such as Feed viewers, job-seeking members, applicants, or members exposed to job-related Feed content.
- Instrumentation needed to connect Feed impressions and interactions to job searches, company follows, profile updates, applications, messages, or hires.
- Guardrail metrics for Feed quality, trust, relevance, spam, privacy, and negative member experiences.
- Segmentation by geography, seniority, industry, role type, job-seeking intent, and content source.
- How the metrics would help LinkedIn make product decisions about ranking, content mix, notifications, creator/company content, and job-related recommendations.
The goal is to produce a practical measurement framework that helps LinkedIn understand whether Feed is creating real value for job seekers while preserving member trust, professional relevance, and the long-term health of the LinkedIn ecosystem.
