Problem Statement Description
Product context: LinkedIn is Microsoft's professional network; its products include profiles, feed, jobs, recruiting, LinkedIn Learning, sales tools, messaging, and ads.
LinkedIn Feed is a core surface where members discover professional updates, content, opportunities, learning signals, and network activity. For job seekers, the Feed can influence how they become aware of roles, improve their professional profile, engage with hiring-related content, and take next steps toward employment outcomes.
In this metrics interview, you are asked to define what “success” means for Feed when serving job seekers. The challenge is to create a measurement framework that distinguishes general Feed engagement from job-seeking progress, while still respecting LinkedIn’s broader ecosystem of professional trust, network quality, recruiter marketplace health, and long-term member value.
Your scope should include how you would identify job seekers, what user behaviors and outcomes matter, how metrics should be instrumented, and how the team should interpret trade-offs between engagement, job application intent, content quality, and marketplace outcomes.
The experience should consider:
- How to define the job-seeker segment, including active, passive, new, and returning job seekers
- The denominator for each metric, such as Feed viewers, job-seeking members, exposed members, or eligible members
- The difference between short-term Feed interactions and meaningful job-seeking outcomes
- Instrumentation needed to connect Feed impressions, clicks, follows, saves, applications, profile updates, learning actions, and recruiter interactions
- Cohorts and cuts by job-seeking intensity, career stage, industry, geography, network strength, and content type
- Guardrails for spam, low-quality engagement, irrelevant content, application fatigue, trust, privacy, and employer-side marketplace health
- How the metrics would help teams make product decisions about ranking, content mix, recommendations, and job-related modules in Feed
The goal is to propose a clear, decision-useful success metrics framework that a LinkedIn product team could use to evaluate whether Feed is genuinely helping job seekers make progress, not merely increasing surface-level engagement.
