Define success metrics for Netflix serving families

Problem Statement Description

Product context: Netflix is a streaming entertainment company; its products include subscription video, original films and series, recommendations, profiles, games, and ad-supported plans.

Netflix wants to understand whether it is successfully serving family households: parents, children, teens, and shared-account viewers who use Netflix together or separately across profiles, devices, and moments of the day. Families may use Netflix for kids’ entertainment, co-viewing, educational or age-appropriate content, live events, games, and quick distraction moments, while parents also care about safety, control, value for money, and ease of finding something everyone can agree on.

Your task is to define a success metrics framework for this audience. Focus on what “success” should mean for Netflix when serving families, how those outcomes should be measured, and how the company could use the metrics to make product, content, personalization, and retention decisions.

Be explicit about the user segment and use cases you are measuring. A family household may include multiple profiles, Kids profiles, shared devices, parental controls, co-viewing sessions, and different content preferences by age group or region. The metrics should distinguish between healthy engagement and potentially misleading signals, such as autoplay-driven watch time, passive viewing, or children repeatedly watching the same content without broader household value.

The experience should consider:

- Clear metric definitions, including numerator, denominator, time window, and whether the unit is household, profile, viewer, session, title, or subscription account.

- Core success outcomes such as family engagement, content discovery, parental trust, retention, and perceived subscription value.

- Instrumentation needs across profiles, devices, Kids mode, parental controls, search, recommendations, playback, downloads, games, and live content.

- Relevant cohorts, including households with children, Kids profile users, teen viewers, co-viewing households, regions, plan types, and new versus tenured subscribers.

- Guardrail metrics for safety, content appropriateness, streaming quality, excessive friction, customer support contacts, cancellations, and negative parental feedback.

- Ways to separate family-specific impact from broader Netflix engagement trends or seasonal viewing patterns.

- How metrics would inform decisions around personalization, content investment, product features, localization, and competitive positioning against other entertainment options.

The goal is to propose a practical, decision-ready metrics framework that helps Netflix evaluate whether families are finding trusted, enjoyable, and valuable entertainment experiences that support long-term household retention.
