Problem Statement Description
Product context: Uber is a mobility and delivery platform; its products include rides, Uber Eats, grocery and retail delivery, freight, driver and courier tools, and marketplace pricing.
You are being asked to share a real example of a hard prioritization decision you made when the right answer was unclear. In the context of Uber, this could relate to trade-offs common in a marketplace product such as Uber One for families: balancing member value, safety, reliability, operational complexity, marketplace liquidity, and unit economics across mobility and delivery use cases.
Your story should show how you handled ambiguity rather than simply describing a busy roadmap. The interviewer is looking for evidence that you can make a defensible call with incomplete data, align stakeholders, communicate trade-offs, and stay accountable for the outcome.
Choose an example where there were competing priorities, meaningful consequences, and no obvious consensus. The situation should be recent and specific enough that you can explain your role, the decision process, what you deprioritized, and what happened after the call was made.
The experience should consider:
- The product or business context, including the users, market, or customer segment affected
- The ambiguity you faced, such as incomplete data, conflicting stakeholder input, shifting goals, or uncertain customer impact
- The options on the table and the explicit trade-offs between them
- Your personal ownership in driving the decision, not just participating in a group discussion
- How you evaluated customer value, business impact, feasibility, risk, and timing
- How you aligned or influenced stakeholders who disagreed
- What you chose to prioritize and what you intentionally deferred or rejected
- The result, what you learned, and how you would apply that learning in a fast-moving environment like Uber
The goal is to demonstrate practical product judgment under uncertainty: how you make high-quality decisions when data is imperfect, teams are moving quickly, and the cost of choosing everything is too high.
