Problem Statement Description
Product context: Airbnb is a travel marketplace connecting guests and hosts; its products include stays, experiences, host tools, guest booking, trust and safety, payments, and reviews.
You are being asked to share a real example of a difficult prioritization decision you made when the path forward was unclear, the data was incomplete, and multiple stakeholders had valid but competing needs. In an Airbnb-style product environment, this could involve trade-offs across guest experience, host supply health, trust and safety, marketplace quality, growth, or premium travel expectations such as group trips or luxury stays.
The interviewer is looking for evidence that you can make a responsible product judgment under ambiguity rather than simply escalate, wait for perfect data, or follow the loudest stakeholder. Your story should show what made the decision hard, what options were on the table, how you evaluated them, what you chose not to do, and how you handled the consequences.
Pick an example where you had meaningful ownership and where the prioritization call had real impact on customers, the business, or the team. The strongest stories will connect the decision to customer value, company strategy, execution constraints, and what you learned from the outcome.
The experience should consider:
- The ambiguous context: what was unknown, conflicting, or changing at the time.
- The users or stakeholders affected, such as guests, hosts, internal teams, partners, or high-value customer segments.
- The competing priorities you had to choose between and why they could not all be pursued.
- The data, qualitative insight, principles, or judgment you used despite uncertainty.
- The role you personally played in driving alignment and making or influencing the final call.
- The trade-offs, risks, and downsides you explicitly accepted.
- The outcome, including business impact, customer impact, team impact, or learning.
- Your reflection on what you would repeat or do differently in a similar situation.
The goal is to demonstrate that you can operate with clear judgment in a complex marketplace environment: balancing customer trust, business goals, operational constraints, and long-term product quality while making a decisive call when there is no obviously correct answer.
