Problem Statement Description
Product context: Stripe is financial infrastructure for internet businesses; its products include payments, Checkout, Billing, Connect, Radar, Issuing, Terminal, and tax tools.
You are being asked to share a real example where you used data to influence or reverse a team decision for a product serving SaaS companies. In a Stripe context, this could relate to products such as tax calculation, billing, payments, compliance workflows, developer onboarding, reporting, or merchant growth tooling for subscription-based businesses.
The interviewer is looking for evidence that you can move beyond opinion-based debate and use data to clarify customer needs, business impact, product risk, or execution priorities. Your story should show how you identified the decision at stake, gathered or interpreted relevant evidence, brought stakeholders along, and helped the team make a better product call.
Choose an example where the decision had meaningful consequences for users, the product, or the business. The best stories will show your judgment in working with incomplete data, your ability to balance quantitative and qualitative inputs, and your ownership in driving the team toward a decision rather than simply presenting analysis.
The experience should consider:
- The product context, user segment, and specific team decision you influenced
- Why the original decision or direction was questionable, risky, or incomplete
- What data you used, such as usage metrics, funnel data, customer interviews, support tickets, revenue impact, retention, compliance issues, or experiment results
- How you evaluated the quality, limitations, and relevance of the data
- How you communicated the insight to product, engineering, design, sales, support, compliance, or leadership stakeholders
- What changed as a result of your intervention and how the team aligned
- The measurable impact on customers, business outcomes, product quality, or operational efficiency
- What you learned about using data responsibly in a product environment serving SaaS companies
Your goal is to tell a concise but complete story that demonstrates analytical rigor, customer empathy, product judgment, and influence. The interviewer should come away understanding not only that you used data, but that you used it to improve a product decision in a way that mattered for SaaS customers and the broader business.
