Problem Statement Description
Product context: Stripe is financial infrastructure for internet businesses; its products include payments, Checkout, Billing, Connect, Radar, Issuing, Terminal, and tax tools.
You are being asked to describe a real situation where you used data to challenge or change a team’s product decision for a SaaS-oriented product in the payments or financial infrastructure space. In the context of Stripe Terminal, this could involve decisions affecting SaaS platforms that embed in-person payments, support their merchants, manage billing, reduce fraud, improve conversion, or expand into new markets.
The interviewer is looking for evidence that you can operate in a high-stakes product environment where decisions affect developers, platform operators, end merchants, and payment reliability. Your example should show how you identified the right data, interpreted it responsibly, influenced stakeholders, and helped the team make a better decision than the one it was initially leaning toward.
Choose a story where the decision was not obvious, the team had competing perspectives, and your use of data materially changed the direction, prioritization, rollout, or product experience. The strongest examples will connect the data to customer impact, business outcomes, and product quality rather than simply reporting metrics.
The experience should consider:
- The product context: what the SaaS company, its merchants, or its developers were trying to accomplish.
- The original team decision or assumption, and why it was being considered.
- The data you used, including how you sourced, validated, segmented, or questioned it.
- The customer or merchant behavior the data revealed, especially around payments, onboarding, conversion, reliability, fraud, or growth.
- How you influenced stakeholders such as engineering, design, sales, risk, operations, or leadership.
- The trade-offs involved, including speed, reliability, compliance, developer experience, revenue, or customer trust.
- The measurable outcome of the changed decision and how you knew it was better.
- What you learned about using data in ambiguous, cross-functional product decisions.
Your goal is to tell a concise but substantive story that demonstrates ownership, analytical judgment, stakeholder influence, and product sense in a Stripe-like environment where data must be used carefully to improve outcomes for SaaS platforms and the businesses they serve.
