Problem Statement Description
Product context: Stripe is financial infrastructure for internet businesses; its products include payments, Checkout, Billing, Connect, Radar, Issuing, Terminal, and tax tools.
You are being asked to describe a real situation where you had to influence a difficult stakeholder while working on a product with characteristics similar to Stripe Treasury: developer-facing financial infrastructure where reliability, compliance, partner dependencies, and merchant outcomes all matter. The stakeholder could have been an executive, engineering lead, legal/compliance partner, sales leader, bank partner, risk team, or another cross-functional decision-maker whose priorities conflicted with yours.
Your story should show how you navigated disagreement in a high-trust, high-consequence product environment. For a Treasury-like product, decisions may involve trade-offs between developer experience, financial reliability, launch speed, regulatory obligations, operational risk, and customer growth. The interviewer is looking for evidence that you can influence without authority, build alignment across functions, and make progress despite ambiguity or resistance.
Choose an example where the stakes were clear and your role was meaningful. The strongest stories will make it easy to understand the product context, why the stakeholder was difficult to influence, what you did to change the conversation, and what happened as a result.
The experience should consider:
- The product or initiative context, especially if it involved financial infrastructure, APIs, merchants, developers, risk, compliance, or operational reliability
- Who the difficult stakeholder was, what they wanted, and why their perspective created friction or slowed progress
- Your specific ownership and what outcome you were accountable for
- How you diagnosed the stakeholder’s concerns rather than simply pushing your own view
- The evidence, customer insight, data, trade-off framing, or relationship-building you used to influence the decision
- How you balanced competing priorities such as speed, reliability, compliance, customer experience, and business impact
- The measurable or observable result of your influence, including what changed in the product, process, decision, or team alignment
- What you learned and how you would apply that lesson in a Stripe-like product environment
The goal is to demonstrate sound judgment, structured influence, and strong cross-functional leadership in a developer-focused financial product setting. Your answer should make clear that you can earn trust with skeptical stakeholders while still driving toward a customer-centered and commercially meaningful outcome.
