Problem Statement Description
Product context: DoorDash is a local commerce and delivery platform; its products include restaurant delivery, DashPass, grocery and retail delivery, merchant tools, and dasher tools.
DoorDash’s Marketplace is the consumer-facing experience where people discover local restaurants, grocery, convenience, and other merchants, decide what to order, place an order, track delivery or pickup, and evaluate the experience afterward. The question asks you to design a better Marketplace experience specifically for consumers, while recognizing that DoorDash is a multi-sided marketplace involving merchants, Dashers, and DoorDash’s own operational constraints.
Focus on the end-to-end consumer journey: opening the app with a need or craving, searching or browsing, comparing merchants and items, understanding fees, delivery times, substitutions, availability, promotions, checkout, order tracking, issue resolution, and reordering. A strong response should identify where consumer friction exists and define a product experience that improves customer value without ignoring delivery reliability, merchant outcomes, Dasher experience, or marketplace economics.
You do not need to redesign every part of DoorDash. Narrow the problem to a meaningful consumer segment, use case, or journey moment, and explain why it matters. Consider how DoorDash competes not only with other delivery apps, but also with cooking at home, pickup, grocery trips, restaurants’ own channels, and large commerce platforms.
The experience should consider:
- Which consumer segment or occasion you are designing for, such as weekday dinner, family meals, grocery top-ups, budget-conscious ordering, new users, or frequent DashPass customers
- Key pain points in discovery, decision-making, trust, price transparency, delivery confidence, personalization, or post-order support
- How consumers evaluate trade-offs across speed, cost, quality, selection, convenience, and reliability
- How the design affects marketplace balance, including merchant visibility, merchant ROI, Dasher workload, delivery batching, and operational feasibility
- What information consumers need before checkout to feel confident placing an order
- How the experience should adapt across restaurant delivery, grocery, convenience, pickup, and repeat ordering
- How success could be reflected in consumer satisfaction, conversion, retention, order frequency, issue rates, and marketplace health
The goal is to frame a clear consumer problem within DoorDash’s Marketplace, propose a thoughtful product experience that reduces friction or increases value, and show how you would reason through user needs, business constraints, and trade-offs in a marketplace environment.
