Problem Statement Description
Product context: DoorDash is a local commerce and delivery platform; its products include restaurant delivery, DashPass, grocery and retail delivery, merchant tools, and dasher tools.
DoorDash wants to improve how the Dasher App supports onboarding around restaurant pickup workflows at global scale. The focus is on helping Dashers successfully complete pickups from restaurants—especially when they are new to a market, new to a restaurant, or encountering unfamiliar handoff procedures—while also reducing operational friction for restaurant staff.
Today, restaurant pickup experiences can vary widely by geography, merchant type, store layout, language, staffing model, order volume, and local regulations. A Dasher may need to know where to park, which entrance to use, how to check in, whether to wait or ask staff, how to verify the order, what to do if food is delayed, and how to handle special cases. Poor onboarding can lead to late deliveries, canceled orders, restaurant frustration, lower Dasher earnings, support contacts, and customer dissatisfaction.
Design a product experience within or closely connected to the Dasher App that makes restaurant pickup onboarding clearer, scalable, and useful without overloading Dashers during time-sensitive delivery tasks. The scope may include first-time pickup education, merchant-specific guidance, real-time task support, feedback loops, localization, and coordination with restaurant-provided information.
The experience should consider:
- Primary users: new and experienced Dashers, restaurant staff, and DoorDash operations teams supporting marketplace reliability.
- The Dasher workflow before arrival, at arrival, during wait time, order verification, issue escalation, and departure.
- How onboarding differs for new Dashers, new restaurants, high-volume merchants, chains, small local restaurants, and international markets.
- Friction points such as unclear pickup instructions, language barriers, store access, parking, long waits, missing items, staff unavailability, and policy differences.
- How restaurant-provided instructions can stay accurate, concise, trustworthy, and easy for Dashers to act on.
- Marketplace trade-offs across delivery reliability, Dasher time and earnings, restaurant staff workload, customer experience, and DoorDash unit economics.
- Scalable design considerations including localization, accessibility, data quality, operational support, and minimizing distraction while Dashers are on active deliveries.
- Success signals such as smoother first pickups, fewer support contacts, reduced wait-related defects, better restaurant satisfaction, and improved on-time delivery.
The goal is to define a thoughtful product design direction that improves the onboarding and pickup experience for restaurant orders in the Dasher App, while accounting for the complexity of DoorDash’s global, multi-sided marketplace.
