Problem Statement Description
Product context: Airbnb is a travel marketplace connecting guests and hosts; its products include stays, experiences, host tools, guest booking, trust and safety, payments, and reviews.
Airbnb’s Host Tools help hosts manage listings, pricing, availability, booking settings, guest communications, check-in details, policies, and performance insights. As Airbnb scales globally and serves use cases such as business travelers who may care about reliability, amenities, cancellation flexibility, receipts, and communication responsiveness, the company needs high-quality event instrumentation to understand how hosts use these tools and where the host workflow breaks down.
In this interview, you are asked to design the event instrumentation approach for Host Tools at scale. Focus on what events should be captured, how they should be structured, how data quality and privacy should be maintained, and how the instrumentation would support product, operational, and marketplace decisions without over-collecting or creating unreliable signals.
Your scope should include the host-facing product flows and the underlying data systems needed to capture, validate, process, and use behavioral events. You do not need to design the full Host Tools product experience, but you should show how instrumentation would help Airbnb measure host actions, diagnose friction, monitor feature adoption, and support trust and marketplace quality.
The experience should consider:
- Key host workflows to instrument, such as listing setup, calendar updates, pricing changes, booking rules, message actions, amenities, cancellations, and performance dashboards.
- Event taxonomy and naming conventions, including event types, required properties, timestamps, entity IDs, user/session context, and platform/source metadata.
- Data contracts between client apps, backend services, analytics pipelines, experimentation systems, and internal dashboards.
- Reliability at scale, including duplicate events, missing events, offline/mobile behavior, latency, ordering, schema evolution, and backfill needs.
- Privacy, security, and compliance concerns around host, guest, listing, location, financial, and business-traveler-related data.
- Observability and data quality monitoring, including validation, alerting, anomaly detection, and ownership for broken instrumentation.
- Product trade-offs between comprehensive tracking, engineering complexity, performance impact, interpretability, and host trust.
- Rollout considerations, including phased deployment, versioning, testing, migration from legacy events, and stakeholder communication.
The goal is to demonstrate how you would design a scalable, trustworthy instrumentation system that enables Airbnb teams to understand Host Tools usage, improve host outcomes, support business-traveler expectations, and make confident product decisions while protecting users and maintaining data quality.
