Problem Statement Description
Product context: Google is a consumer technology, ads, AI, and cloud company; its products include Search, YouTube, Android, Maps, Gmail, Chrome, Google Play, Workspace, and Google Cloud.
Google is considering a scalable Google Cloud–backed feature for families that allows household members to coordinate and manage shared digital experiences across devices, accounts, and age groups. The feature may involve family group setup, member invitations, child/guardian roles, shared content or settings, notifications, and cross-product integrations within the Google ecosystem.
Families have diverse needs: parents want simple control and safety, children need age-appropriate access, and all members expect the experience to be reliable, private, and easy to use globally. The system must support high usage peaks, multiple device types, account transitions, permission changes, and regional privacy expectations without creating confusing workflows or exposing sensitive family data.
As a Technical PM, focus on defining the high-level product and system requirements, the major components, data flows, reliability expectations, security/privacy boundaries, and rollout considerations. You are not expected to write code or produce a detailed low-level architecture, but you should be able to reason clearly about APIs, data models, scale, trade-offs, and operational risks.
The experience should consider:
- Core family workflows: creating a family group, inviting members, assigning roles, managing permissions, and handling member removal or account changes
- User types and edge cases: parents, guardians, children, teens, multi-household families, shared devices, and lost or compromised accounts
- Key backend capabilities: identity, authorization, family graph storage, notification delivery, audit logs, configuration management, and integration with Google services
- Data and API requirements: what information must be stored, how services communicate, how permissions are checked, and how changes propagate across devices
- Privacy, safety, and compliance: child data protection, consent, data minimization, regional requirements, abuse prevention, and transparency for users
- Reliability and scale: global availability, latency expectations, failure modes, rate limits, disaster recovery, and graceful degradation
- Rollout and observability: phased launch, experiment design, logging, monitoring, alerting, support tooling, and metrics for adoption, trust, and system health
The goal is to describe a high-level system and product approach that is technically sound, user-aware, privacy-conscious, and scalable enough for a Google-level family feature, while making clear the trade-offs and assumptions behind your design.
