Problem Statement Description
Product context: Microsoft is a productivity, software, AI, gaming, and cloud company; its products include Windows, Microsoft 365, Teams, LinkedIn, Xbox, Azure, Dynamics, and Copilot.
Xbox Game Pass serves gamers across console, PC, cloud, and mobile touchpoints, where expectations are high for fast discovery, entitlement accuracy, low-latency access, and consistent experiences across devices. In this question, you are asked to design the high-level system for a scalable gamer-facing Game Pass feature, such as a feature that helps users discover, access, manage, or engage with games in the subscription catalog.
As a Technical PM, your focus is not to write code or produce a detailed architecture diagram, but to define the product requirements, user flows, system components, data needs, dependencies, and trade-offs that would allow the feature to work reliably at Xbox scale. The feature should account for millions of users, frequent catalog changes, different device capabilities, subscription states, regional availability, and real-time service expectations.
You should clarify the intended gamer workflow, the core product promise, and the system boundaries before describing how client apps, backend services, identity, entitlement, catalog, telemetry, personalization, notifications, or cloud gaming services may interact. The design should also consider how Microsoft’s expectations around trust, privacy, security, platform leverage, and operational reliability shape the product and technical choices.
The experience should consider:
- Primary gamer use cases, including discovery, launch, save continuity, recommendations, multiplayer context, or subscription-related access
- Functional and non-functional requirements, including latency, availability, scalability, device coverage, and regional support
- Key APIs, backend services, data models, and integration points with Xbox identity, Game Pass catalog, billing, entitlements, and telemetry
- Handling of edge cases such as expired subscriptions, removed games, parental controls, offline usage, device limits, and regional licensing restrictions
- Privacy, security, abuse prevention, and compliance expectations for gamer data and account-level experiences
- Observability needs, including logging, health metrics, alerts, experimentation, and user-impact diagnostics
- Rollout approach across console, PC, cloud, and mobile surfaces, including feature flags, gradual release, rollback, and support readiness
- Product trade-offs between personalization, performance, cost, engineering complexity, and user trust
The goal is to assess how you translate a gamer-facing Game Pass opportunity into a technically feasible, scalable, and reliable product system while balancing user experience, platform constraints, business needs, and operational risk.
