Design the high-level system for a scalable Xbox Game Pass feature used by gamers

Problem Statement Description

Product context: Microsoft is a productivity, software, AI, gaming, and cloud company; its products include Windows, Microsoft 365, Teams, LinkedIn, Xbox, Azure, Dynamics, and Copilot.

Microsoft is asking you to design the high-level system for a scalable gamer-facing feature within Xbox Game Pass. The feature should fit a real Game Pass workflow, such as helping subscribers discover games, manage their library, launch or install titles, receive personalized recommendations, or continue play across Xbox console, PC, and cloud gaming surfaces.

Focus on the Technical PM perspective: define what the feature needs to do for gamers, how it interacts with Game Pass subscription entitlements, game catalog data, user profiles, devices, notifications, and gameplay/session systems. The design should be scalable enough for a large global gaming audience, including peak-traffic moments such as major game launches, promotions, holidays, or first-party title releases.

You are not expected to produce low-level architecture diagrams or code. Instead, frame the product requirements, major system components, key APIs/data flows, reliability needs, privacy/security considerations, rollout approach, and trade-offs between user experience, performance, cost, and operational complexity.

The experience should consider:

- Core gamer workflow: entry point, discovery/action, confirmation, cross-device continuity, and failure states.

- Functional requirements: catalog access, subscription entitlement checks, personalization, saves/preferences, install or play actions, and notifications where relevant.

- System interfaces: Xbox identity, Game Pass subscription service, catalog service, device/platform clients, cloud gaming, telemetry, and experimentation systems.

- Scalability and reliability: latency expectations, high availability, caching, graceful degradation, retries, and handling launch-day traffic spikes.

- Data and privacy: user profile data, gameplay history, parental controls, regional restrictions, consent, and secure handling of account information.

- Observability: metrics, logs, alerts, funnel instrumentation, error tracking, and operational dashboards for live incidents.

- Rollout and risk management: phased release, feature flags, A/B testing, backward compatibility, rollback plans, and support readiness.

Your goal is to present a clear high-level system design that shows how a Microsoft Technical PM would translate a gamer need into reliable product requirements and system boundaries, while balancing player experience, platform constraints, trust, and scale for Xbox Game Pass.
