Problem Statement Description
Product context: Netflix is a streaming entertainment company; its products include subscription video, original films and series, recommendations, profiles, games, and ad-supported plans.
Netflix has observed a 20% drop in activation for Live Events at global scale, with particular concern for family audiences. In this RCA interview, you are expected to frame how you would investigate whether the decline reflects a real user behavior change, a measurement issue, a product or discovery regression, content-market fit challenges, or operational problems specific to live streaming.
Assume Live Events may include globally promoted, time-sensitive programming where users need to discover the event, understand its relevance, start playback at the right time, and remain confident that the stream will work across devices, profiles, languages, and network conditions. Families may have additional friction around shared TVs, kids’ profiles, parental controls, time zones, competing routines, and content suitability.
Your task is not to propose a new Live Events strategy upfront, but to diagnose the activation drop in a structured way. You should define what “activation” means, identify where in the funnel the drop is happening, separate global patterns from regional or segment-specific issues, and determine what evidence would support or disprove each hypothesis.
The experience should consider:
- The exact activation metric definition, denominator, eligibility rules, and whether the 20% drop is absolute, relative, week-over-week, event-over-event, or versus forecast.
- Funnel stages such as impression, event detail page view, reminder set, notification open, live join, successful playback start, and minimum watch threshold.
- Segmentation by country, language, device, app version, plan type, family profile type, acquisition channel, time zone, and event genre.
- Instrumentation checks for logging changes, event taxonomy changes, delayed data, duplicate counting, bot/internal traffic removal, and missing client-side events.
- Product and operational hypotheses around discovery placement, personalization, notifications, localization, parental controls, live start-time confusion, stream quality, buffering, or authentication failures.
- External and content-market factors such as competing live programming, school schedules, holidays, local broadcasters, YouTube/TikTok behavior, and event relevance by region.
- Evidence needed to prioritize hypotheses, including cohort comparisons, pre/post analysis, control groups, historical baselines, and event-level benchmarks.
- Immediate mitigation, stakeholder communication, monitoring, and prevention mechanisms if the issue affects user trust or major upcoming live events.
The goal is to demonstrate how you would lead a rigorous, global-scale root cause investigation for a high-visibility Netflix product area, balancing metric accuracy, user experience diagnosis, business impact, and fast operational decision-making without jumping prematurely to a solution.
