Problem Statement Description
Product context: Spotify is an audio streaming company; its products include music, podcasts, audiobooks, playlists, recommendations, creator tools, subscriptions, and ads.
Spotify Playlists are a core daily-use surface for premium subscribers, spanning saved playlists, collaborative playlists, personalized playlists, offline access, playback queueing, search, recommendations, and cross-device continuity. In this interview, you are asked to reason as a Technical PM responsible for improving the reliability and latency of the Playlist experience for a global, high-scale streaming product.
Focus on the user workflow: opening a playlist, loading tracks and metadata, editing or reordering songs, saving changes, syncing across devices, starting playback, downloading for offline use, and recovering gracefully when network or backend conditions are degraded. Consider the expectations of premium subscribers, who are more likely to expect fast, consistent, and uninterrupted access to their music library.
You should frame the technical product problem clearly, identify the most important reliability and latency issues to investigate, and describe how you would work with engineering, data, design, infrastructure, and support teams to improve the experience. The scope should include product trade-offs, system dependencies, APIs and data flows, observability, privacy/security considerations, rollout planning, and how success would be measured.

- Reliability definitions, including error rates, stale data, failed edits, missing tracks, offline download failures, and inconsistent device state.
- Backend and client dependencies, such as playlist metadata services, track availability, personalization systems, cache layers, playback services, identity, and entitlement checks.
- Data and API requirements, including freshness, conflict handling, pagination, versioning, retries, and degradation behavior.
- Observability needs, including client-side telemetry, backend traces, service-level objectives, cohort analysis, alerts, and incident review loops.
- Privacy and security expectations for user libraries, collaborative playlists, account access, and data sharing across devices.
- Rollout and risk management, including staged launches, A/B or holdout measurement, rollback criteria, customer support readiness, and communication during incidents.
Your goal is to present a structured Technical PM approach for diagnosing and improving Playlist reliability and latency without jumping directly to a single fix. Show how you would prioritize the right user journeys, define technical and product success metrics, coordinate execution across teams, and make trade-offs that protect Spotify’s premium subscriber experience at global scale.
