Improve onboarding in Dasher App for restaurants

Problem Statement Description

Product context: DoorDash is a local commerce and delivery platform; its products include restaurant delivery, DashPass, grocery and retail delivery, merchant tools, and dasher tools.

DoorDash wants to improve the onboarding experience in the Dasher App for the restaurant pickup workflow. Focus on how a new or less-experienced Dasher learns what to do when accepting restaurant orders, arriving at a merchant, locating the pickup area, communicating with staff, confirming the right order, handling delays, and leaving with confidence.

Today, restaurant pickups can vary widely by merchant, location, time of day, order complexity, parking availability, staff readiness, and local operating norms. Poor onboarding can create confusion for Dashers, extra work for restaurant staff, longer pickup times, missed or incorrect orders, customer delays, and lower trust across the marketplace.

This is a product design exercise. You are not being asked to optimize the entire DoorDash marketplace or redesign merchant onboarding broadly. Your scope is the Dasher-facing experience that helps Dashers successfully complete restaurant pickups while respecting merchant operations, Dasher earnings, delivery reliability, and customer experience.

The experience should consider:

- The end-to-end Dasher workflow from first restaurant offer through arrival, pickup, issue handling, and departure.

- Differences between first-time Dashers, experienced Dashers visiting a new restaurant, and Dashers handling complex or high-volume pickups.

- Restaurant-side friction such as unclear pickup zones, busy staff, order verification needs, wait times, and inconsistent handoff processes.

- What information should be introduced upfront versus in-context during an active delivery.

- How the app should support learning without slowing Dashers down or creating cognitive overload.

- Marketplace trade-offs across Dasher efficiency, merchant ROI, delivery reliability, customer satisfaction, and operational cost.

- Edge cases such as closed restaurants, missing orders, wrong items, long waits, parking constraints, and language/accessibility needs.

Your goal is to define a focused product experience that reduces pickup confusion and improves restaurant handoffs for Dashers, while explaining the user problems, key design choices, constraints, and how you would evaluate whether the onboarding improvement is successful.
