Problem Statement Description
Product context: Airbnb is a travel marketplace connecting guests and hosts; its products include stays, experiences, host tools, guest booking, trust and safety, payments, and reviews.
Airbnb Search is the front door for travelers comparing stays across many countries, trip types, price ranges, and levels of travel intent. For budget travelers, search quality is especially sensitive to total price transparency, availability, location flexibility, fees, trust signals, cancellation policies, and confidence that a listing is a good value. At global scale, changes to ranking, filters, pricing displays, map/list behavior, and personalization can meaningfully affect guest conversion, host demand distribution, and marketplace health.
You are the PM responsible for prioritizing the next quarter’s Search roadmap. The team has more opportunities than capacity, including traveler-facing improvements, ranking and relevance work, marketplace-quality initiatives, infrastructure dependencies, localization needs, and competitive pressure from travel aggregators and hotel-booking platforms. You need to decide what should be built now, what should wait, and how to sequence work across product, engineering, data science, design, operations, and policy partners.
This is an execution prioritization problem, not a request to design one feature in isolation. Your response should show how you would translate company goals and user pain points into an operating plan for a quarter, while accounting for global marketplace constraints, launch risk, experimentation, and cross-functional dependencies.
The experience should consider:
- The primary users and workflows within Airbnb Search, especially budget-conscious guests comparing options across destinations, dates, fees, and listing types.
- The business and marketplace outcomes the roadmap should influence, such as successful bookings, search-to-book conversion, guest trust, host supply health, and demand distribution.
- How to evaluate competing roadmap candidates using impact, confidence, effort, risk, urgency, strategic fit, and dependency constraints.
- Sequencing across the quarter, including discovery, design, engineering, experimentation, localization, QA, policy or trust review, and launch readiness.
- Owners and cross-functional dependencies across search ranking, pricing, maps, payments, trust and safety, host teams, data science, infrastructure, and customer support.
- Go/no-go criteria for experiments and launches, including guardrail metrics for guest experience, host outcomes, cancellations, support contacts, latency, and marketplace fairness.
- Rollback and mitigation planning for search changes that could degrade relevance, reduce conversion, over-concentrate demand, or create regional/regulatory issues.
- Communication expectations for leadership, regional teams, hosts, support operations, and other product teams affected by Search changes.
The goal is to present a clear quarterly roadmap prioritization approach that balances user value, business impact, operational feasibility, and marketplace responsibility. Your plan should make it easy for stakeholders to understand why certain Search initiatives are prioritized, how success will be measured, what risks must be managed, and how the team will execute with discipline at global scale.
