Problem Statement Description
Product context: Microsoft is a productivity, software, AI, gaming, and cloud company; its products include Windows, Microsoft 365, Teams, LinkedIn, Xbox, Azure, Dynamics, and Copilot.
Microsoft Teams is looking to accelerate growth among students as a primary audience, while still fitting within Microsoft’s broader productivity, education, security, and platform ecosystem. Students use collaboration tools across classes, group projects, clubs, internships, tutoring, and social coordination, often switching between school-mandated systems and consumer tools that feel faster or more familiar.
You are the PM responsible for shaping and executing the next roadmap cycle for Teams with students as the main growth segment. The challenge is not just to identify attractive product ideas, but to prioritize five roadmap bets in a way that balances student adoption, institutional requirements, ecosystem leverage, technical feasibility, and near-term execution risk.
Your response should show how you would turn a broad growth mandate into an operating plan: what bets matter most, how they are sequenced, what dependencies exist across Teams, Microsoft 365, education IT admins, identity systems, AI capabilities, and compliance teams, and how you would know whether to continue, pause, or roll back each bet.
The experience should consider:
- The distinct workflows of students, educators, administrators, and school IT teams, and where their needs conflict
- Prioritization criteria such as growth impact, retention, frequency of use, strategic fit, feasibility, and risk
- Dependencies on Microsoft 365, identity, security, compliance, AI, mobile, and education integrations
- Sequencing across short-term adoption wins and longer-term platform or ecosystem bets
- Owners, cross-functional teams, resourcing assumptions, and execution governance
- Launch readiness, go/no-go criteria, instrumentation, and communication to schools and students
- Risks such as privacy, safety, academic integrity, admin resistance, competitive pressure, and low student engagement
- Rollback or mitigation plans if a bet harms trust, reliability, compliance, or core Teams usage
The goal is to present a clear, executive-ready prioritization and execution plan for five Teams roadmap bets that could credibly grow student usage while preserving Microsoft’s strengths in productivity, enterprise trust, platform leverage, and education ecosystem relationships.
