Resolve a cross-functional conflict blocking Maps

Problem Statement Description

Product context: Apple is a consumer hardware, software, and services company; its products include iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, AirPods, iOS, App Store, iCloud, Apple Music, and Apple TV+.

Apple Maps is preparing to ship a family-oriented experience, such as shared trip planning, safer navigation coordination, location-aware pickup/drop-off support, or another Maps workflow designed for households using Apple devices together. The launch is blocked by a cross-functional conflict between teams such as Maps, Privacy, Family Sharing/iCloud, Siri, Safety, Design, Legal, and/or platform engineering.

You are the PM responsible for getting the initiative unblocked without compromising Apple’s standards for privacy, trust, accessibility, product quality, and ecosystem integration. The interview is asking how you would diagnose the conflict, align stakeholders, make progress under ambiguity, and create an execution path that can realistically ship.

Assume the disagreement is material: teams may be misaligned on user value, privacy boundaries, data sharing, timeline risk, technical dependencies, UX quality, or launch readiness. Your response should focus on how you would operate as the product leader, not on designing the full Maps feature itself.

The experience should consider:

- The specific user workflow for families in Maps and why the blocked capability matters to parents, children, caregivers, or household members

- The nature of the cross-functional conflict, including which teams disagree, what each team is optimizing for, and what decision is currently stuck

- How you would establish owners, decision rights, escalation paths, and a shared operating cadence

- Key dependencies across Apple services, device platforms, privacy systems, location infrastructure, design review, and QA

- How you would sequence discovery, alignment, technical validation, legal/privacy review, beta testing, and launch preparation

- Go/no-go criteria for shipping, including product quality, safety, privacy, reliability, accessibility, and customer trust thresholds

- Risk mitigation plans, including fallback scopes, phased rollout, rollback triggers, internal communication, and external messaging

- How you would prevent the same type of conflict from recurring in future Maps or family ecosystem initiatives

The goal is to demonstrate how you would unblock execution in a high-stakes Apple product environment: balancing customer value, principled privacy decisions, premium UX expectations, cross-team accountability, and disciplined launch management.
