QuestionsBehavioralDoorDash

Tell me about a time you handled conflict between engineering and business stakeholders

Problem Statement Description

Product context: DoorDash is a local commerce and delivery platform; its products include restaurant delivery, DashPass, grocery and retail delivery, merchant tools, and dasher tools.

DoorDash wants product managers who can navigate tension between technical realities and business urgency in a complex local commerce marketplace. In this behavioral question, you are being asked to describe a real situation where engineering and business stakeholders disagreed, and you played a meaningful role in resolving the conflict.

Anchor your story in a product environment similar to DoorDash’s Merchant Portal, where merchants depend on reliable tools for operations, menu management, promotions, order accuracy, performance insights, and ROI. Conflicts may involve trade-offs such as speed versus quality, merchant revenue goals versus platform reliability, short-term sales targets versus long-term scalability, or custom merchant requests versus reusable product infrastructure.

Your response should show how you understood each side’s incentives, clarified the actual decision to be made, and helped the group move forward without damaging trust. The strongest examples will demonstrate ownership, structured communication, customer and business judgment, and follow-through after the decision.

The experience should consider:

- The specific conflict, including what engineering wanted, what business stakeholders wanted, and why the disagreement mattered

- The merchant, marketplace, or operational impact at stake

- Your role in diagnosing the root cause of the conflict rather than simply mediating opinions

- How you used data, customer evidence, technical constraints, or business context to reframe the discussion

- How you balanced delivery reliability, merchant ROI, marketplace health, Dasher/customer impact, and unit economics

- The decision or compromise that was reached, including what trade-offs were accepted

- The outcome, including measurable impact where possible and what happened after implementation

- What you learned about stakeholder management and how it changed your approach as a PM

The goal is to tell a concise, credible story that demonstrates you can lead through disagreement in a high-velocity marketplace environment, align cross-functional partners around customer and business outcomes, and make pragmatic product decisions without ignoring technical constraints.
