Problem Statement Description
Product context: Stripe is financial infrastructure for internet businesses; its products include payments, Checkout, Billing, Connect, Radar, Issuing, Terminal, and tax tools.
Stripe Atlas helps founders form and operate companies, while Stripe’s risk teams are responsible for protecting the platform from fraud, compliance exposure, financial loss, and degraded merchant trust. In this scenario, you are the PM responsible for execution when multiple stakeholders are asking for different Atlas-related work to ship first.
The conflicting requests may come from risk, compliance, legal, support, engineering, sales, growth, or operations teams. Some requests may reduce fraud or regulatory exposure, while others may improve founder onboarding, conversion, support efficiency, or merchant growth. The challenge is not to design a new feature, but to explain how you would make and operationalize a shipping decision in a high-trust financial infrastructure environment.
Your response should show how you create clarity from ambiguity, compare requests with different types of impact, align stakeholders, and move work through execution without ignoring risk, dependencies, or launch readiness.
The experience should consider:
- The stakeholders involved, their incentives, and the nature of their conflicting requests
- How you would define decision criteria across user impact, risk reduction, revenue, compliance, operational load, and engineering effort
- How you would handle urgent risk or compliance asks versus growth or UX improvements
- Owners, dependencies, sequencing, and how cross-functional teams would stay aligned
- Go/no-go criteria for shipping, including data quality, operational readiness, legal or compliance review, and support preparedness
- Launch risks, rollback or mitigation plans, and how incidents would be handled
- Communication cadence and how you would explain the decision to teams whose requests are not prioritized first
The goal is to demonstrate a practical execution approach for deciding what ships first on Stripe Atlas when stakeholder needs conflict, while preserving Stripe’s standards for financial reliability, global compliance, developer and founder experience, and long-term merchant trust.
