Build a trust-focused improvement for Terminal used by subscription businesses

Problem Statement Description

Product context: Stripe is financial infrastructure for internet businesses; its products include payments, Checkout, Billing, Connect, Radar, Issuing, Terminal, and tax tools.

Stripe Terminal enables businesses to accept in-person payments, while Stripe’s subscription products help manage recurring billing relationships. In this question, you are designing a trust-focused improvement for subscription businesses that use Terminal as part of their customer lifecycle, such as gyms, coworking spaces, clinics, classes, clubs, rental services, or membership-based retail experiences.

The core challenge is that subscription businesses often combine an in-person interaction with an ongoing financial commitment. A customer may sign up, update a card, retry a failed payment, change a plan, pause membership, or authorize future billing while physically present. These moments can create trust gaps: customers may be unsure what they are agreeing to, merchants may worry about disputes or failed renewals, and staff may need to explain sensitive billing actions quickly and accurately.

Your task is to define a product experience that improves trust in this Terminal-enabled subscription workflow. The improvement should be grounded in the needs of merchants, their frontline staff, and end customers, while fitting Stripe’s role as financial infrastructure rather than a consumer-facing subscription marketplace.

The experience should consider:

- The specific subscription-business workflow where Terminal is involved, such as signup, card-on-file capture, renewal recovery, plan changes, cancellations, or consent for recurring billing.

- The trust pain points for customers, including transparency, consent, billing clarity, data security, receipts, dispute confidence, and control over future charges.

- The trust pain points for merchants and staff, including operational simplicity, compliance confidence, reduced chargebacks, fewer billing misunderstandings, and reliable payment collection.

- How the experience would work across the reader, staff-facing interface, merchant dashboard, customer notifications, and any Billing-related systems.

- Constraints around payment security, privacy, global regulatory expectations, network rules, and Stripe’s need to support many business types and countries.

- How the product should balance conversion and low-friction checkout with explicit consent and customer understanding.

- What signals, feedback, or artifacts would help both the customer and merchant feel confident after the in-person interaction is complete.

The goal is to propose a clear, high-impact product design direction for a trust-building improvement to Stripe Terminal for subscription businesses. Focus on the user journey, the moments where trust breaks down, the product surface area involved, and how the experience would create confidence without adding unnecessary complexity.
