Problem Statement Description
Product context: Uber is a mobility and delivery platform; its products include rides, Uber Eats, grocery and retail delivery, freight, driver and courier tools, and marketplace pricing.
Uber operates a global marketplace where merchants—such as restaurants, grocery stores, and other local businesses—depend on Wallet to understand money movement, payouts, fees, refunds, adjustments, promotions, and account balances. For many merchants, Wallet is not just a financial tool; it is a source of confidence that Uber is accurately tracking earnings and paying them on time.
Design a trust-focused improvement for the merchant Wallet experience. Focus on the day-to-day workflow of a merchant owner, finance manager, or store operator who needs to reconcile Uber activity against their internal records, identify why balances changed, and feel confident when something looks unexpected. The improvement should address moments where ambiguity, delayed information, inconsistent explanations, or lack of control could damage trust.
Your scope is the product experience inside or adjacent to Wallet, not a complete redesign of Uber’s merchant business. You may consider merchants of different sizes, markets, and operational maturity, but your proposal should be clear about which user segment and trust problem you are prioritizing.
The experience should consider:
- The merchant’s workflow for checking balances, payouts, deductions, refunds, fees, and adjustments
- Points where financial information may feel unclear, delayed, inconsistent, or hard to verify
- How the product can make money movement more transparent without overwhelming users
- What merchants need when they believe there is an error or discrepancy
- Differences between small independent merchants and larger multi-location operators
- How the experience should support global markets, local payment timelines, and operational constraints
- The role of notifications, audit trails, explanations, support escalation, or reconciliation tools
- How to balance trust, usability, fraud prevention, operational cost, and marketplace reliability
The goal is to define a specific product improvement that increases merchant trust in Uber Wallet by reducing uncertainty, improving transparency, and helping merchants confidently understand and act on their financial information.
