Problem Statement Description
Product context: Spotify is an audio streaming company; its products include music, podcasts, audiobooks, playlists, recommendations, creator tools, subscriptions, and ads.
Spotify wants to improve how free listeners engage with creators across its global audio ecosystem. In this product design interview, you are designing the listener-facing experience around Creator Tools: the surfaces, interactions, and workflows that help free users discover, follow, interact with, and potentially support artists, podcasters, audiobook creators, and other audio publishers.
Free listeners are a large, diverse, ad-supported audience with different levels of intent, bandwidth, language, device quality, and payment ability. Their current journey may include discovering a creator through recommendations, listening with ads and restrictions, deciding whether to follow, exploring more content, sharing with others, or engaging with creator-led moments. The design should address friction in this journey without assuming that free users will immediately subscribe or pay.
This is not just a feature-design exercise; it is a global product experience problem for Spotify’s creator ecosystem. The solution space should balance listener value, creator value, monetization, discovery, retention, and platform trust while accounting for competitors such as YouTube, TikTok, Apple Music, Amazon Music, Audible, and other entertainment platforms competing for attention.
The experience should consider:
- The specific free-listener segments you are designing for, including casual listeners, creator fans, podcast listeners, emerging-market users, and low-bandwidth or mobile-first users.
- Key moments in the listener workflow: discovery, first listen, repeat engagement, following, sharing, creator interaction, and return visits.
- Frictions created by ads, limited control, paywalls, regional content availability, language, notifications, and cross-format navigation across music, podcasts, and audiobooks.
- How creator-facing capabilities translate into a useful and intuitive listener-facing experience without overwhelming the core listening journey.
- Global scale constraints such as localization, creator diversity, content moderation, privacy, trust and safety, accessibility, and device/platform differences.
- How the experience could create value for creators through reach, engagement, feedback, fan development, or monetization while still serving free listeners first.
- How success might be evaluated through listener engagement, creator outcomes, retention, discovery quality, ad-supported monetization, and guardrails around spam or low-quality interactions.
The goal is to define a clear product opportunity and design a coherent Spotify experience that improves the relationship between free listeners and creators at global scale, while making thoughtful trade-offs across user value, business impact, and ecosystem health.
