Build a trust-focused improvement for Social Listening used by audiobook listeners

Problem Statement Description

Product context: Spotify is an audio streaming company; its products include music, podcasts, audiobooks, playlists, recommendations, creator tools, subscriptions, and ads.

Spotify wants to explore a trust-focused improvement for Social Listening specifically for audiobook listeners. Unlike music listening, audiobooks involve long-form, sequential content where spoilers, progress mismatches, attention, privacy, and context can materially affect the experience. Social features that feel lightweight for songs may feel risky or disruptive when users are sharing a chapter, reacting to a plot point, or listening at different speeds.

Design a product improvement that helps audiobook listeners feel comfortable using Social Listening with others. Consider users such as friends reading the same book together, book club members, couples or families listening remotely, and listeners who may want social presence without exposing too much about their habits, progress, or reactions.

Your scope is the product experience: what user problem you are solving, when it appears in the listening journey, how users discover and use the improvement, and how it fits within Spotify’s broader audio ecosystem. You should focus on trust as a product design goal rather than simply adding more social engagement.

The experience should consider:

- How audiobook listening workflows differ from music or podcast listening in session length, pacing, memory, and progress tracking.

- What trust concerns users may have, including spoilers, privacy, unwanted joins, progress visibility, shared controls, and reaction etiquette.

- How the experience supports both synchronous and asynchronous social listening scenarios.

- How users understand who can see, join, control, or react during a listening session.

- How the product handles mismatched audiobook progress, different playback speeds, pauses, and chapter boundaries.

- How the design balances social connection with immersion and focus.

- How Spotify can make the feature feel safe, transparent, and easy to recover from if something goes wrong.

Your goal is to define a clear user problem, identify the most important trust friction, and propose a coherent product experience that makes Social Listening more appropriate and compelling for audiobook listeners without undermining the core listening experience.
