Improve onboarding in Podcasts for podcast fans at global scale

Problem Statement Description

Product context: Spotify is an audio streaming company; its products include music, podcasts, audiobooks, playlists, recommendations, creator tools, subscriptions, and ads.

Spotify wants to improve the onboarding experience for podcast fans at global scale. This is a product design question focused on how a user who already likes podcasts, or is likely to become a regular podcast listener, first enters Spotify’s podcast experience and begins building habits around discovery, following shows, listening, saving, and returning.

Consider the onboarding journey across new Spotify users, existing music-first Spotify users, and users switching from podcast-heavy alternatives such as YouTube, Apple Podcasts, Amazon Music, Audible, or social platforms. The challenge is not simply to explain “Spotify has podcasts,” but to help podcast fans quickly find relevant shows, episodes, creators, formats, languages, and listening contexts that make Spotify feel like a strong primary podcast destination.

The experience should account for Spotify’s global footprint, personalization strengths, creator ecosystem, and monetization context, while respecting user attention and avoiding unnecessary setup friction. Think about where onboarding begins, how much information to ask from users, how recommendations become trustworthy, and how the product supports both casual podcast exploration and committed podcast fandom.

The experience should consider:

- Key podcast fan segments, such as daily news listeners, long-form interview fans, true crime listeners, comedy fans, education/self-improvement listeners, sports fans, and creator-led community audiences.

- Onboarding entry points across signup, first app open, search, home feed, music listening sessions, external links, social sharing, and creator pages.

- Friction in moving from intent to value, including finding familiar shows, understanding episode order, following creators, managing downloads, resuming episodes, and building a listening queue.

- Global needs such as language, local content supply, regional popularity, cultural preferences, bandwidth constraints, device differences, and market maturity.

- How personalization should balance explicit preference capture with implicit signals from music taste, search behavior, follows, skips, completions, and listening time.

- How to support discovery without overwhelming users with too many categories, shows, ads, recommendations, or competing audio formats.

- Trust and quality signals that help users choose what to listen to, such as creator credibility, episode relevance, recency, popularity, ratings, summaries, and social proof.

- Success signals for onboarding, such as activation, first meaningful listen, follow rate, repeat listening, retention, creator engagement, and long-term podcast habit formation.

Your goal is to define a focused product experience that helps podcast fans quickly understand why Spotify is a compelling place for podcasts, discover content they care about, and build durable listening behavior, while making clear who you are designing for, what pain points matter most, and what trade-offs the onboarding experience must manage.
