Problem Statement Description
Product context: Spotify is an audio streaming company; its products include music, podcasts, audiobooks, playlists, recommendations, creator tools, subscriptions, and ads.
Spotify’s free listeners use the music experience under meaningful constraints: ads, limited skips, shuffle-heavy listening, lower control, and frequent questions to upgrade. Many are casual or price-sensitive users who still expect fast access to songs, playlists, artists, discovery, and a sense that Spotify understands their taste. Your task is to explore how the free music experience could be improved without simply removing the core differences between free and premium.
Focus on the end-to-end listening workflow for a free user: discovering something to play, choosing or influencing what plays next, handling interruptions, saving music, returning to favorites, sharing, and deciding whether Spotify is worth continuing to use. Consider both new free users who are still building their taste profile and existing free users who may be frustrated by restrictions but not ready to subscribe.
This is a product design question, so the emphasis is on identifying user needs, friction points, and product experience opportunities. You should balance listener value with Spotify’s business needs around retention, ad monetization, premium conversion, creator discovery, and long-term engagement.
The experience should consider:
- The primary free-listener segments, such as casual listeners, students, emerging-market users, playlist-first users, and users who arrive from social or search.
- Key moments of friction in free music listening, including control, discovery quality, ads, skips, repeat listening, and playlist management.
- How personalization and recommendations should work when the user has limited history or mixed listening intent.
- How to improve the perceived value of free without undermining premium differentiation.
- How the experience fits across mobile, desktop, smart speakers, and connected devices where free-tier behavior may differ.
- How artists, podcasts, audiobooks, and broader audio discovery may or may not belong in the free music journey.
- What success would mean for listeners, Spotify, advertisers, and creators.
The goal is to define a focused product experience that makes free music listening meaningfully better for Spotify users while preserving a clear business model and upgrade path.
