Design a new feature in Apple Pay that helps developers achieve better outcomes at global scale

Problem Statement Description

Product context: Apple is a consumer hardware, software, and services company; its products include iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, AirPods, iOS, App Store, iCloud, Apple Music, and Apple TV+.

Apple Pay is used by developers across many types of apps and commerce experiences, from retail checkout and subscriptions to transit, travel, marketplaces, and digital services. In this interview, you are asked to design a new Apple Pay feature that helps developers achieve better outcomes globally while staying consistent with Apple’s expectations for privacy, trust, premium user experience, accessibility, and deep ecosystem integration.

Focus on the developer as the primary user, not just the end consumer. Consider the workflow a developer or product team goes through when deciding to adopt Apple Pay, integrating it across platforms and regions, testing payments, handling edge cases, measuring performance, and improving conversion or reliability over time. The feature should address meaningful friction in that workflow and be viable at global scale across countries, payment methods, regulations, devices, and merchant maturity levels.

You should frame the problem, identify the developer segments and use cases that matter most, articulate the pain points, and define what success would look like. The scope should be a product experience or platform capability within Apple Pay, not a broad business strategy or a purely technical backend redesign.

The experience should consider:

- Which developer segments are being served, such as large merchants, app developers, marketplaces, subscription businesses, or small businesses

- Where developers face friction today in discovery, onboarding, integration, testing, launch, optimization, or troubleshooting

- How global scale changes the requirements across currencies, local payment norms, compliance, localization, and regional availability

- How the feature protects consumer privacy while still giving developers enough insight or capability to improve outcomes

- How the experience fits into Apple’s developer ecosystem, including tools, documentation, APIs, dashboards, and platform guidelines

- How to balance developer flexibility with Apple Pay’s simplicity, security, reliability, and premium checkout experience

- What trade-offs may arise between speed of implementation, control, transparency, fraud prevention, and user trust

- How success should be evaluated for both developers and Apple Pay without compromising the end-user experience

Your goal is to define a clear product opportunity and design a feature that meaningfully improves developer outcomes on Apple Pay at global scale, while explaining the target users, key workflows, experience requirements, constraints, and success criteria.
