Redesign the mobile experience of Apple Music for small businesses

Problem Statement Description

Product context: Apple is a consumer hardware, software, and services company; its products include iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, AirPods, iOS, App Store, iCloud, Apple Music, and Apple TV+.

Apple Music is primarily designed around individual listening, discovery, and personal libraries. In this question, you are asked to rethink its mobile experience for small businesses that use music as part of their customer environment—such as cafés, salons, boutiques, fitness studios, clinics, and local service businesses.

These users are not simply “listening to music”; they are managing atmosphere, brand perception, staff operations, customer comfort, and sometimes multiple locations from a phone. Their needs may differ from consumer listeners because playback happens in a shared commercial setting, often with staff turnover, time pressure, business hours, device constraints, and expectations around reliability, appropriateness, and ease of control.

Your task is to define the small-business user, identify the most important workflow frictions in the current mobile experience, and design a product experience that would make Apple Music more useful and trustworthy in a business context. Stay focused on the mobile experience and the Apple ecosystem, while being clear about what is in scope versus out of scope.

The experience should consider:

- The key small-business personas involved, such as owners, managers, front-desk staff, instructors, or employees controlling music during shifts.

- The end-to-end workflow for setting up, selecting, scheduling, controlling, and troubleshooting music during business hours.

- Pain points around shared device usage, staff permissions, explicit content, playlist consistency, interruptions, and inappropriate personalization.

- Business-specific needs such as mood, time of day, location type, customer demographics, and brand fit.

- Apple expectations around premium UX, privacy, accessibility, reliability, and seamless hardware-software integration.

- Constraints related to mobile-first operation, multi-user control, connectivity, device handoff, and ongoing playback continuity.

- How this experience should coexist with Apple Music’s consumer product without confusing or degrading the core personal listening experience.

The goal is to frame a clear product design opportunity and propose a thoughtful mobile experience that helps small businesses confidently manage music in customer-facing environments, while preserving the simplicity, trust, and polish expected from Apple.
