How would you detect unhealthy growth in Windows

Problem Statement Description

Product context: Microsoft is a productivity, software, AI, gaming, and cloud company; its products include Windows, Microsoft 365, Teams, LinkedIn, Xbox, Azure, Dynamics, and Copilot.

Microsoft sees Windows growth across enterprise environments, but not all growth is necessarily healthy. In this context, “growth” could show up as more activated devices, more enterprise seats, more upgrades, more monthly active devices, or more engagement with Windows management and security features. Your task is to define how you would detect whether that growth is sustainable, valuable, and trusted by enterprise admins.

Focus on a metrics approach for Windows in managed enterprise settings, where IT admins care about security, compliance, device reliability, upgrade readiness, application compatibility, policy control, and support burden. The challenge is to distinguish genuine adoption and retained usage from growth driven by duplicate devices, short-lived activations, forced migrations, poor-quality upgrades, unmanaged endpoints, or behavior that creates downstream admin pain.

You should assume Microsoft has access to product telemetry, licensing and activation data, Windows update signals, enterprise management data, support interactions, and customer/account-level information, subject to privacy, compliance, and enterprise trust constraints.

The experience should consider:

- How you would define “healthy” versus “unhealthy” Windows growth for enterprise customers

- Which primary growth metrics matter, including the numerator, denominator, and time window

- How you would segment by enterprise cohort, device type, OS version, deployment channel, region, industry, and customer size

- What instrumentation or data quality checks are needed before trusting the signal

- Which guardrail metrics would reveal hidden damage, such as reliability issues, security risk, admin friction, support burden, or churn risk

- How to separate new adoption, upgrades, reactivations, duplicate counting, and temporary usage spikes

- How the metric framework would help Microsoft decide whether to accelerate, investigate, pause, or remediate a growth trend

The goal is to present a clear, decision-useful measurement framework that helps Windows teams detect when enterprise growth is creating durable value versus when it is masking product, operational, or customer-trust problems.
