Problem Statement Description
Product context: Airbnb is a travel marketplace connecting guests and hosts; its products include stays, experiences, host tools, guest booking, trust and safety, payments, and reviews.
Airbnb’s Groups experience helps families and other travel parties coordinate a trip together, such as sharing stays, inviting members, comparing options, making decisions, and progressing toward booking. Because group planning often happens across devices, time zones, and multiple sessions, users expect the experience to feel fast, consistent, and trustworthy whenever they open a shared trip or interact with group content.
In this technical PM interview, you are being asked to frame how you would improve reliability and latency for Groups. The focus is not on designing a new group travel feature, but on understanding the user-critical workflows, backend and client dependencies, data consistency needs, and operational trade-offs that determine whether the Groups experience works smoothly at Airbnb scale.
Consider the needs of family travelers, trip organizers, invited guests, and hosts indirectly affected by booking intent and conversion. You should also account for Airbnb’s marketplace context, where trust, availability accuracy, booking confidence, privacy, and host supply health all matter.
The experience should consider:
- Core user journeys where latency or reliability failures are most damaging, such as loading a shared group, inviting members, viewing saved listings, syncing votes or comments, and moving toward booking.
- Clear technical requirements for availability, response time, consistency, freshness, and graceful degradation across web and mobile clients.
- APIs, services, data models, and event flows likely involved in group creation, membership, permissions, listing references, notifications, and booking handoff.
- Failure modes such as stale listing availability, missing group members, duplicated actions, delayed notifications, partial page loads, permission errors, and cross-device sync issues.
- Privacy and security expectations for family groups, including invitation access, member visibility, shared trip data, and unauthorized access prevention.
- Observability needs, including latency percentiles, error rates, dependency health, client-side performance, funnel impact, and user-reported failures.
- Rollout and risk management, including experimentation, staged launches, backward compatibility, incident response, and rollback criteria.
Your goal is to define a structured technical product approach for identifying the biggest reliability and latency problems, prioritizing improvements based on user and business impact, and aligning engineering, design, data, and operations around a safer, faster Groups experience.
