Problem Statement Description
Product context: DoorDash is a local commerce and delivery platform; its products include restaurant delivery, DashPass, grocery and retail delivery, merchant tools, and dasher tools.
DoorDash is evaluating whether its Logistics Platform has strong product-market fit among students across global markets. In this context, “students” may include university, college, and other post-secondary learners who rely on delivery for meals, groceries, convenience items, campus-area merchants, and time-sensitive local commerce needs.
Your task is to define how you would measure product-market fit for this segment at global scale. The answer should focus on building a metrics approach that helps DoorDash understand whether students are not only trying the platform, but repeatedly depending on it in a way that is valuable for customers, merchants, Dashers, and the marketplace.
This is a metrics interview question, so the emphasis is not on proposing new features or growth tactics. Instead, clarify what product-market fit means for a logistics marketplace, how it should be measured across countries and campus environments, and how the measurement system would guide investment, expansion, or iteration decisions.
The experience should consider:
- The core student use cases and workflows, such as ordering food between classes, late-night delivery, grocery replenishment, group orders, campus drop-offs, and budget-sensitive purchases.
- Metric definitions that distinguish trial, repeat usage, habit formation, reliability, satisfaction, and willingness to choose DoorDash over alternatives.
- Clear denominators and cohorts, such as active students, verified students, campus-area users, new student users, retained cohorts, geography, school type, and seasonality.
- Instrumentation needed to identify student behavior, order context, delivery reliability, substitution/refund issues, merchant coverage, and delivery completion quality.
- Marketplace guardrails, including Dasher earnings, merchant ROI, delivery times, cancellation rates, support contacts, promotions dependence, and unit economics.
- Global comparability challenges, including different academic calendars, campus layouts, local competitors, affordability levels, payment methods, and regulatory constraints.
- How the metrics would separate true product-market fit from short-term discount-driven demand or one-off seasonal spikes.
- How the measurement framework would support decisions about scaling, localizing, improving supply, or pausing investment in specific student markets.
The goal is to describe a rigorous, decision-useful measurement framework for determining whether DoorDash’s Logistics Platform has durable product-market fit with students globally, while accounting for the realities of a multi-sided logistics marketplace.
