Problem Statement Description
Product context: Microsoft is a productivity, software, AI, gaming, and cloud company; its products include Windows, Microsoft 365, Teams, LinkedIn, Xbox, Azure, Dynamics, and Copilot.
Microsoft Dynamics is used by SMB teams to run critical customer, sales, finance, and operations workflows. For these users, latency can show up during everyday tasks such as loading dashboards, opening customer records, saving changes, running reports, syncing integrations, or moving through multi-step business processes. Even small delays can reduce productivity, increase support burden, and push customers to compare the experience against alternatives such as Salesforce.
You are the Technical PM responsible for working with engineering to reduce latency in Dynamics for SMB customers. The interview is focused on how you would frame the problem technically and product-wise, align engineering teams, define measurable targets, and make trade-offs across reliability, scalability, security, cost, and customer experience.
Your response should show how you would collaborate with backend, frontend, infrastructure, data, and support teams to diagnose where latency is coming from, prioritize improvements, and roll out changes safely in a Microsoft enterprise SaaS environment.
The experience should consider:
- Which Dynamics workflows, user segments, tenants, regions, devices, and integrations are most affected by latency
- How latency should be measured, including client-side, server-side, API, database, network, and third-party dependency timing
- What data, telemetry, logs, traces, and customer feedback would be needed to separate perception from actual performance
- How to define success metrics, service-level targets, guardrails, and business impact for SMB customers
- How to partner with engineering on root-cause analysis, prioritization, ownership, and sequencing of performance work
- How to handle privacy, security, compliance, and enterprise trust requirements while collecting and using performance data
- How to roll out improvements through experiments, staged deployments, observability, rollback plans, and customer communication
The goal is to describe a rigorous Technical PM approach for reducing Dynamics latency: turning an ambiguous performance complaint into a measurable product and engineering initiative, aligning stakeholders on what matters most to SMB users, and ensuring improvements are delivered safely without compromising reliability, trust, or core business workflows.
