Problem Statement Description
Product context: Microsoft is a productivity, software, AI, gaming, and cloud company; its products include Windows, Microsoft 365, Teams, LinkedIn, Xbox, Azure, Dynamics, and Copilot.
Microsoft Power Platform enables knowledge workers and teams to automate work, build lightweight apps, connect business systems, and collaborate across Microsoft 365 and enterprise tools. In this interview, you are asked to define the API and data model needed to support a new workflow experience for knowledge workers who want to create, run, monitor, and share business workflows without relying heavily on professional developers.
Assume the workflow could involve common enterprise tasks such as approvals, notifications, document updates, CRM or ticketing updates, task assignment, and collaboration across tools like Teams, Outlook, SharePoint, Dynamics, or third-party systems. The challenge is to design the technical product foundation that allows workflows to be authored, executed, secured, extended, and observed at enterprise scale.
Your response should focus on how you would structure the core platform capabilities rather than designing a single end-user screen. You should clarify the user and system requirements, define the key entities and relationships, describe the API surface area, and address reliability, permissions, governance, extensibility, and operational concerns appropriate for a Microsoft enterprise platform.
The experience should consider:
- The primary users and roles, such as workflow creators, approvers, admins, IT/security teams, and downstream participants.
- The core objects in the data model, including workflow definitions, steps, triggers, actions, connectors, runs, tasks, users, permissions, audit events, and state.
- The API capabilities needed for creating, updating, validating, publishing, executing, pausing, retrying, monitoring, and deleting workflows.
- Integration needs across Microsoft services and external enterprise systems, including connector abstraction, authentication, rate limits, and schema mapping.
- Security, privacy, and compliance requirements, including tenant boundaries, role-based access control, data loss prevention, auditability, and admin governance.
- Reliability and scale expectations, including idempotency, retries, versioning, concurrency, failure handling, and long-running workflow execution.
- Observability and lifecycle management, including logs, run history, error diagnostics, usage analytics, deployment, rollback, and backward compatibility.
The goal is to demonstrate how you would think like a Technical PM for Power Platform: translating a broad workflow product need into a robust API and data model that supports low-code productivity, enterprise trust, developer extensibility, and scalable operations without jumping directly to implementation details or a single prescribed architecture.
