Problem Statement Description
Product context: Airbnb is a travel marketplace connecting guests and hosts; its products include stays, experiences, host tools, guest booking, trust and safety, payments, and reviews.
Airbnb Experiences depends on high-quality hosts who can create, list, and run memorable activities for travelers. The onboarding journey for a prospective Experiences host likely spans understanding eligibility, shaping an activity concept, submitting details for review, meeting safety and quality expectations, setting availability and pricing, and becoming confident enough to host a first guest.
Your task is to improve the onboarding experience for Experiences hosts. Focus on the workflow friction a new or prospective host may face as they move from initial interest to having a live, bookable experience. Consider that hosts may vary widely by geography, category, language, digital comfort, professionalism, and familiarity with Airbnb’s marketplace expectations.
This is a product design question, so define the user, their needs, pain points, and the product experience that would help them make progress. You should not assume the only problem is form completion; the onboarding journey may include education, trust-building, review readiness, operations setup, quality assurance, and motivation to continue after setbacks.
The experience should consider:
- Different host segments, such as first-time local creators, professional tour operators, existing Airbnb stay hosts, and rejected or stalled applicants
- Key onboarding stages from discovery and concept creation through approval, listing setup, first booking, and first hosted experience
- Friction around unclear requirements, safety standards, content quality, pricing, scheduling, local regulations, and review timelines
- Airbnb’s need to protect traveler trust, marketplace quality, safety, and brand consistency while increasing healthy host supply
- Global constraints including language, cultural differences, category variety, seasonality, and local compliance expectations
- Signals that indicate whether hosts are confused, low-quality, unmotivated, blocked, or ready to launch
- How the product should support confidence, clarity, and completion without lowering the bar for quality
The goal is to frame a thoughtful product improvement for Airbnb Experiences host onboarding that helps more qualified hosts successfully launch high-quality experiences while preserving trust and marketplace standards.
