Problem Statement Description
Product context: Amazon is a commerce, logistics, media, devices, and cloud company; its products include Marketplace, Prime, Prime Video, Alexa devices, ads, fulfillment, and AWS.
Amazon Prime is preparing a launch that affects Prime video subscribers, but engineering constraints have created a delay. The launch may involve customer-facing experience changes, backend service dependencies, entitlement or billing logic, content discovery, device/platform support, or integration with broader Prime membership systems.
You are the PM responsible for re-planning execution. The interviewer is looking for how you would regain control of the launch plan, align engineering and business stakeholders, protect the customer experience, and make clear trade-offs without assuming unlimited resources or slipping indefinitely.
Your response should focus on the operating plan: how you assess the delay, determine what can still ship safely, sequence remaining work, communicate changes, and decide whether to launch, phase, defer, or roll back. Consider Amazon’s context of high-scale systems, cross-functional ownership, operational excellence, and customer trust.
The experience should consider:
- The nature of the engineering constraint, such as platform readiness, scalability, reliability, dependency delays, data quality, or integration risk
- The affected customer segments, especially Prime video subscribers across devices, geographies, or membership states
- Owners and dependencies across product, engineering, QA, operations, customer support, marketing, legal, finance, and partner teams
- Revised sequencing, including what must be completed before launch versus what can move to a later phase
- Go/no-go criteria, launch readiness checks, testing coverage, monitoring, and escalation paths
- Customer and business impact of delay, including subscriber expectations, engagement, retention, promotional commitments, and Prime value perception
- Communication plans for executives, internal teams, external partners, and customers where relevant
- Rollback, mitigation, and contingency plans if the revised launch introduces quality or reliability issues
The goal is to explain how you would create a credible re-plan that balances speed, quality, customer impact, and business urgency while making ownership, risks, decision points, and next steps explicit.
