Problem Statement Description
Product context: Meta is a social technology company; its products include Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, Threads, Quest, creator tools, and ads.
You are the PM responsible for Meta Marketplace growth in emerging markets, where many buyers and sellers rely on mobile-first, low-bandwidth experiences, messaging-based negotiation, informal logistics, cash or local payment methods, and community trust. Marketplace already benefits from Meta’s social graph and messaging ecosystem, but growth depends on choosing the right roadmap bets and executing them with limited engineering, operations, integrity, and go-to-market capacity.
Your task is to prioritize five Marketplace roadmap bets for this audience. The focus is not only on which bets appear attractive, but on how you would sequence them, align cross-functional teams, manage launch risks, and decide whether each bet should scale, pause, or be rolled back. Assume the bets are intended to improve meaningful marketplace activity across buyer discovery, seller supply, trust and safety, transaction completion, and monetization.
The operating plan should consider:
- The target users and workflows: first-time buyers, casual sellers, small merchants, local communities, and users moving between Marketplace, Groups, Messenger, and WhatsApp-like behaviors.
- Prioritization criteria such as user impact, confidence, reach, effort, strategic fit, safety risk, monetization potential, and dependency on local infrastructure.
- Sequencing across the five bets, including what must be validated early, what can run in parallel, and what should wait for enabling capabilities.
- Owners and dependencies across product, engineering, design, data science, integrity, ads, payments, customer support, policy, and local market teams.
- Launch readiness, including market selection, localization, education, seller onboarding, abuse monitoring, and support escalation paths.
- Go/no-go criteria, rollback triggers, and guardrail metrics for fraud, spam, scams, user reports, buyer/seller dissatisfaction, and marketplace quality.
- Communication plans for internal stakeholders and external users, especially where trust, safety, or policy changes affect seller behavior.
- Post-launch learning loops, including cohort analysis, experimentation, qualitative feedback, and decision gates for scaling to additional countries.
Your goal is to present a clear priority order for the five roadmap bets and explain how Meta should execute against that order in a practical, staged way. The interviewer is looking for your ability to translate a broad growth mandate into an operating plan that balances user value, execution feasibility, marketplace health, and Meta’s strategic advantages in social connection, messaging, ads, and safety at scale.
