Redesign the mobile experience of Groups for luxury travelers at global scale

Problem Statement Description

Product context: Airbnb is a travel marketplace connecting guests and hosts; its products include stays, experiences, host tools, guest booking, trust and safety, payments, and reviews.

Airbnb wants to rethink the mobile Groups experience for luxury travelers booking at global scale. The focus is on high-value group trips where multiple travelers, family members, assistants, or planners may be involved in discovering, evaluating, booking, and coordinating premium stays and experiences across countries.

Today, this workflow can involve fragmented decision-making, high trust expectations, complex preferences, larger budgets, privacy needs, payments, host communication, itinerary coordination, and uncertainty around quality or service standards. Luxury travelers may compare Airbnb against hotels, villa agencies, Google Travel, Booking.com, Expedia, Vrbo, and local rental platforms, so the mobile experience must feel reliable, polished, and confidence-building without harming host supply health or marketplace quality.

Your task is to frame the user problem and design scope for a redesigned mobile Groups experience. Consider the end-to-end journey from inspiration and shortlist creation through group alignment, booking confidence, payment/approval, pre-trip coordination, in-stay support, and issue resolution. The expected output is not just a screen redesign, but a product experience that fits Airbnb’s marketplace model, global travel context, and trust expectations for premium group travel.

The experience should consider:

- Primary users: trip organizers, invited travelers, family decision-makers, executive assistants, hosts, and Airbnb support teams

- Group workflow friction: preference collection, destination/date alignment, property comparison, approvals, payments, itinerary sharing, and communication

- Luxury-specific needs: privacy, quality assurance, service expectations, exclusivity, flexibility, and rapid support during high-stakes trips

- Global constraints: languages, currencies, payment methods, local regulations, safety norms, time zones, and cultural expectations

- Marketplace dynamics: host responsiveness, listing quality, availability accuracy, cancellation risk, dispute resolution, and supply-side burden

- Mobile-first behavior: planning across short sessions, sharing externally, notifications, collaboration, and trust-building on small screens

- Competitive expectations from hotels, premium travel agencies, online travel platforms, and local luxury rental providers

- Risks around over-personalization, operational complexity, fraud, privacy, accessibility, and inconsistent service delivery

The goal is to define a compelling mobile product direction that improves confidence, collaboration, and conversion for luxury group travelers while preserving Airbnb’s trust, marketplace quality, and global scalability.
