Problem Statement Description
Product context: Amazon is a commerce, logistics, media, devices, and cloud company; its products include Marketplace, Prime, Prime Video, Alexa devices, ads, fulfillment, and AWS.
Amazon is considering a new Logistics workflow that enables third-party sellers to coordinate fulfillment-related activities through programmatic interfaces rather than relying only on manual seller tools. The workflow may involve sellers, Amazon logistics systems, carrier partners, warehouse or pickup operations, and customer-facing order states. Your task is to define the API and data model needed to support this workflow in a scalable, reliable, and seller-friendly way.
Assume sellers vary widely in technical maturity, shipment volume, inventory complexity, and integration patterns. Some sellers may use in-house systems, while others may rely on third-party ecommerce platforms or ERP tools. The product experience must support clear state transitions, predictable error handling, operational visibility, and safe integration with Amazon’s broader logistics ecosystem.
This is a Technical PM problem. You should frame the workflow, identify the primary users and systems, define the core entities and API interactions, and reason through product and technical trade-offs. Do not assume unlimited engineering capacity or perfect seller data quality; the design should be practical for phased rollout and long-term extensibility.
The experience should consider:
- Seller and system workflows, including onboarding, shipment creation, updates, cancellations, tracking, exceptions, and reconciliation.
- Core data entities, relationships, identifiers, ownership, lifecycle states, and required versus optional fields.
- API surface design, including request/response patterns, idempotency, pagination, versioning, webhooks or eventing, and error semantics.
- Data quality and validation requirements, especially for addresses, inventory availability, package dimensions, service levels, and carrier constraints.
- Reliability, scalability, latency, retries, rate limits, backward compatibility, and failure-mode behavior during logistics disruptions.
- Privacy, security, authorization, auditability, seller isolation, and safe handling of customer and shipment data.
- Observability and operations, including logging, metrics, traceability, seller support tooling, SLA monitoring, and incident diagnosis.
- Rollout approach, integration testing, developer documentation, migration paths, and product trade-offs between flexibility and operational control.
Your goal is to describe a technically sound product design that lets third-party sellers integrate with Amazon Logistics confidently while preserving operational excellence, customer trust, and extensibility for future logistics capabilities.
