Build a trust-focused improvement for Messenger used by marketplace sellers

Problem Statement Description

Product context: Meta is a social technology company; its products include Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, Threads, Quest, creator tools, and ads.

Meta Marketplace sellers often rely on Messenger to handle the most sensitive parts of a transaction: answering buyer questions, negotiating price, sharing pickup or delivery details, confirming payment expectations, and resolving issues after the exchange. For many sellers, Messenger is not just a chat tool; it is the operating layer for converting buyer interest into a safe, successful sale.

Design a trust-focused improvement for Messenger that specifically supports Marketplace sellers. The improvement should address friction sellers face when deciding whether a buyer is legitimate, managing risky or low-quality conversations, protecting personal information, and giving buyers enough confidence to move forward without creating unnecessary burden for honest participants.

Your scope is the Messenger experience used in the Marketplace transaction workflow, not a redesign of Marketplace end-to-end. Consider how trust signals, conversation context, safety interventions, seller controls, and transaction readiness could show up naturally inside messaging while preserving speed, privacy, and the lightweight nature of peer-to-peer commerce.

The experience should consider:

- The seller journey from receiving the first buyer message through negotiation, meetup or delivery coordination, and post-transaction follow-up.

- Different seller types, such as casual one-time sellers, high-volume local sellers, and sellers dealing with higher-value or higher-risk items.

- Common trust and safety pain points, including scams, no-shows, harassment, suspicious payment requests, fake urgency, and uncertainty about buyer intent.

- How Messenger can provide useful context or confidence without exposing sensitive user data or creating a surveillance-like experience.

- The balance between reducing seller risk and maintaining low-friction buyer-seller communication.

- How the product should handle ambiguous cases where a buyer may be new, low-signal, or unfamiliar with Marketplace norms.

- How success might be reflected in seller confidence, transaction completion, reduced negative interactions, and healthy marketplace activity.

Your goal is to define a clear user problem, identify the most important seller trust moments, and propose a product experience that improves seller confidence and safety within Messenger while remaining scalable for Meta’s large, diverse Marketplace ecosystem.
